Which tests Which laboratory tests should you do?

The following is a guide to the tests that are recommended for your age, or according to the results of your last investigations.

Discuss with your doctor if you need more information.

If ...                                              Do...

If 20 to 30 yrs. of age

Do a Total Cholesterol
       If >180 mgs/dl, do a Lipid Profile

If more than 30 yrs. of age

Do a Lipid Profile

 

 

If parent or sibling has Diabetes

Do a 2 Hour Post-Prandial Blood Sugar

If Fasting Blood Sugar is >95 Mgs/dl

Do a 2 Hour Post-Prandial Blood Sugar

If Serum Creatinine >1.7 mgs/dl

Do a full Renal Function Test

 

 

Urine test (dipstick):

 

       If protein ++ or more

Do a micro-urinalysis

       If blood + or more

Do a micro-urinalysis

       If glucose + or more

Do a 2 Hour Post-Prandial Blood Sugar

 

 

If you have Diabetes

Do a Glycated Haemoglobin (HbA1c)

If you have Diabetes or
       High Blood Pressure:

Do a Serum Creatinine

             and if no protein in urine

Do a urine Micro-albumin test

 

 

Women – if sexually active or more than 40 yrs. of age

Do a Pap smear

Women – if more than 45 yrs. of age

Do a mammogram and Pelvic ultrasound

Men – if more than 45 yrs. of age

Do a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)

If more than 50 yrs. of age


    

 

and if a smoker, or have coronary artery disease

Do Faecal Occult Blood (Cancer of bowel)
       If positive, repeat
       If positive again, do Colonoscopy
Do abdominal ultrasound for aneurysm

If more than 60 yrs of age

Do a Full Blood Count

If obese and tired all the time

Do a Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
