The Wellness Centre
A Wellness Centre is a health promotion facility in the purest sense. Unlike a
hospital out-patient clinic, a community health centre or a doctor's office, it
is not a gateway to the medical care system, but a resource centre for the
elevation of overall standards of health which incidentally serves to reduce the
risk of disease.
Health promotion is achieved, not through the administering of "care", but
through insight, motivation and personal action. In other words, through changes
in attitude and behaviour on the part of individuals and communities. The tools
for bringing about these changes are communication, education and participation.
A client visiting the Wellness Centre is enjoined to confront his personal
health history; to take stock of his present condition, and to set clear
objectives for the improvement of that condition.
Whereas a medical care facility fosters dependency on health professionals, a
Wellness Centre encourages independence. Indeed, health promotion is predicated
on increased personal responsibility.
A Wellness Centre is:
- a Change Centre... for the inculcation of new attitudes and behaviour.
- an Information Centre...for all a client needs to know about personal and community health
- an Assessment Centre...for check ups, blood tests, fitness, and stress evaluations.
- a Support Centre...in times of stress, illness, change.
- a Management Centre...for diabetes, high blood pressure, stress and other chronic conditions.
- a Referral Centre...whatever the health-related condition or need.
- a Corporate Resource Centre...for building employee health and improving productivity.
- In other words...a place for people who want to grow!
